Fat transfer, also referred to as fat grafting, is a common procedure that helps add volume and definition to certain parts of your body and face. During this procedure, fat is safely taken from one part of your body and comfortably injected into another to fix visible signs of aging. Emmett Plastic Surgery, led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Jennifer Emmett, has helped Denver, Lone Tree, and Douglas County residents enhance their bodies and faces using fat transfer injections.
What is Fat Transfer?
Fat transfer, also called fat grafting, is a process where fat is taken from one part of your body and injected into another to enhance volume and contour. Fat injections replace artificial dermal fillers to smooth out lines, wrinkles and folds on the face, restoring your youthful appearance. Fat can also be used to fill in cheeks and add fullness to your lips.
Benefits of Fat Transfer and Injections
More patients are undergoing fat grafting because of its numerous benefits, including:
- Safe and effective
- Restores lost volume in sagging and sunken cheeks
- Improves the appearance of lines and wrinkles
- Long-lasting results
- Minimizes scars and other imperfections on the skin
- Uses your own fat to restore facial youthfulness
- Can be used to restore natural contours during breast reconstruction
Is Fat Transfer Right for Me?
If you want to reverse the signs of aging without going under the knife, fat grafting may be right for you. Fat transfer injections are a great option for people wanting to eliminate wrinkles and creases without using artificial dermal fillers.
How Are Fat Transfer Injections Administered?
Fat grafting can take anywhere from one to three hours, depending on the number of areas being treated. It is performed on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic.
Dr. Emmett begins by harvesting fat from another area on your body, such as your abdomen, buttocks or thighs. Fat is removed via liposuction using a small cannula to suction fat.
The fat tissue is then placed into a centrifuge to purify the sample and separate the ingredients to obtain whole, clean and undamaged fat cells to inject into the face.
Dr. Emmett uses a small, fine-gauge needle to administer the extracted fat back into the natural fat compartments on your face where volume has been lost.
After your fat transfer procedure, you will be taken into recovery until you are ready to be released.
What Can I Expect Following a Fat Transfer Injection?
Because fat injections are a bit more involved than artificial dermal fillers, swelling and bruising usually take a little longer to dissipate. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may need to wear a bandage following treatment. However, provided that you are comfortable, you are able to return to work and your normal activities after treatment. You should avoid vigorous exercise for a few days to avoid irritation or complications.
How Much Does Fat Transfer and Injections Cost?
The cost for fat injections will vary from patient to patient, depending on the extent of the procedure and cosmetic treatment necessary. Fat injections are usually considered elective cosmetic treatments so many insurances will not cover the cost. Dr. Emmett offers financing through CareCredit®, Simmons Bank, and Prosper® Healthcare Lending. We also accept cash, personal checks, and credit cards.
