What are saline implants?
A saline breast implant is one that contains sterilized salt water. In the event the implant leaks or ruptures, the body will naturally absorb the saline without any harmful effects. This type of implant is not filled prior to insertion. Instead, the shell is put in place and then filled with saline solution to increase the breast size.
What are silicone implants?
Another option for patients to consider is the silicone implant. These implants are made with a silicone gel inside that will self-bind in the event of a leak or rupture. This keeps the silicone from spreading elsewhere in the body. Silicone breast implants also feel more like a solid, giving a natural look and feel to the breasts. The realistic contouring effect achieved with this type of implant makes it the most desirable choice for our patients. The silicone implant is also filled prior to insertion, unlike the saline implants.
