Dr. Jennifer Emmett and her team of professionals provide a wide range of cosmetic surgery solutions that can be used to address problems and improve body contours. One of the more popular options today is that of fat transfers or “fat grafting.”

What is a fat transfer?

Fat transfer is a surgical process by which a plastic surgeon will remove fat cells from one area of the body to add it to another. With fat transfer procedures, patients can improve an area where excess fat resides while augmenting another area where the fat cells may improve body contours. The process is done by extracting adipose fat through traditional liposuction, processing the fat, and then reinjecting the purified fat cells into the area desired for improvement. This method has been used by doctors since the 1990’s and continues to be a reliable, safe, and effective method of enhancing the cosmetic appearance of many areas of the body, including the face, hips, hands, breasts, and buttocks.

Where can fat grafting be performed?

Patients can use fat grafting on two areas of the body that can be enhanced with the removal and reinjection of unwanted fat cells. It is important that patients book a consultation appointment with their doctor to speak to what they’d like done, discuss what they’d like to accomplish, and to determine if they are proper candidates for this or other surgical treatments.

What is the process of fat transfers?

  • Extraction – using conventional methods such as liposuction, the doctor will remove fat from an area of the body where excess has formed.
  • Processing – the fat retrieved through liposuction is decanted and put through a centrifuge to achieve purified fat cells.
  • Reinjection – the purified fat cells harvested from the patient’s own body is then reinjected into an area that requires augmentation.
